As a service provider, security guards have fixed working hours. According to Section 201 of the Labor Act, no one can be made to work more than 48 hours a week, in special cases a maximum of 60 hours. But less number of security guards are employed by the customer than usually required, as a result instead of 8 hours duty daily they have to do 12 to 16 hours duty in most cases. But their monthly salary is only 8 thousand to 10 thousand taka, there are no such facilities. In the light of Labor Rules, 2018, according to the Notification-2019 of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, the minimum monthly salary for ‘Junior Security Guards’ and ‘Senior Security Guards’ has been fixed at Tk. 8,375 and Tk. 11,300 respectively. Moreover, according to the circular issued by the Ministry of Finance in 2019, the monthly salary of the guards is fixed at 17 thousand 610 taka, but the customers do not want to pay this amount.
But those who are protecting life and property, if they are paid so low, the illusion of protected property is naturally reduced. Moreover, on the one hand, their salary is low, on the other hand, they are not paid regularly. There is less opportunity for vacations, they arrange vacations among themselves. Duty more than 8 hours at a stretch leads to laxity, endangering the safety of life and property. So one guard should not be given the duty of two. Security should be given the utmost importance by employing the required number of guards and ensuring their reasonable pay and rest should be accepted as members of the family or institution. Most private security guards join the profession from remote areas of the country, eking out a living on a meager salary at the end of the month. On top of that, customers or employers deduct their salaries for minor lapses in duty, deducting huge sums of money from the company providing the guard.
Again, with this meager salary, the customer’s expectations are not lacking, they expect well-trained, turnout, smartness and efficiency from the private security guards like army personnel.
